Web companies try to dominate business of renting vacation homes
DALLAS When Elizabeth and Robin Wood decided to rent out their new vacation home in Florida, they hired a local real estate agent to hunt for renters. But they also paid 300 dollars to list the house on specialized Web sites. The Woods agreed to pay the agent a 25 percent commission on any rentals they got, even ones that they found online. One of the companies that Wood used was Austin-based HomeAway Incorporated. Home Away will announce today that it's obtained 160 (M) million dollars in venture capital. It says it'll pay an undisclosed sum for an older and leading provider of U-S listings, V-R-B-O-dot-com, or Vacation Rentals By Owner. HomeAway is less than two years old, but it's moved quickly to consolidate the infant industry. The company launched when Austin Ventures officials teamed with the chief executive of another company they'd backed to search for a new technology investment.
NABOR details third-quarter listings, sales
The Naples Area Board of Realtors (NABOR) has released third-quarter statistics for home listings and sales in Naples in a new format, reflecting what the organization says is a more accurate and relevant portrait of the local real estate market. "In an effort to assure that the figures are relevant to Naples, we have developed a new reporting format," said Jo Carter, NABOR president. "In this report only sales of homes within the Naples geographic area are being shown, specifically all areas in Collier County excluding Marco Island and other outlying areas. This is a change from previous periods when the sales of all homes sold by members of the Sunshine MLS were reported, regardless of the geographic location of the home." Since previous numbers and the stats provided through the Florida Association of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors included transactions only by Naples MLS members who sell property all over Southwest Florida, they were not truly representative of Naples, Carter said.
